After lunch he pulls me in for a warm hug and a sweet kiss before taking me home. As is his custom now, he comes in to check on Shelby. She's seated on the couch with anger and frustration on her face. "He called me again," she says flatly.

"When?" Ledger asked, falling into 'protector' mode instantly.

"About an hour ago," she shakes her head. "He sounds like a lunatic, Cam. I heard some girl in the background this time, and I heard him get all sweet when he suggested she treat herself to a long bath, obviously wanting her away from his conversation, because you know he'd never bother to move. That might inconvenience him. Manipulative bastard. Then he was instantly back to angry once she was out of the room."

"What did he say?" I ask meekly, wishing all this would go away. Ledger puts his arm around me and pulls me protectively to him as Shelby continues. I'm grateful for the hug.

"He said you owe him, and that you humiliated him by leaving," she relays.

"Holy fucking shit," Ledger says with anger. "He and I are going to have a discussion. Today."

"Don't—" I start, but Ledger stops me with a look which tells me exactly how serious he is about this course of action.

"Just a conversation," he says with a pointed glare. "He needs to know, if nothing else, you and Shelby are not alone. He needs to understand he can't bully you like he used to. I'll take Mason with me…to make my point clearer."

Shelby and I look at each other and I nervously bite my lip. Ledger pulls us both into a bear hug together and kisses each of us on the head. "Don't worry ladies."

I reluctantly give Ledger Garrett's address and phone number, then lock the door behind him. "God, Shelby. What have I gotten us into? I'm so sorry."

"Look, I understand why you feel guilty about this. Yes, you chose the world's biggest asshole to fall in love with, and yes, you were an idiot for staying with him so long, but a breakup is a breakup. He's a child if he thinks there's any reason to drag this out. From that point on, the blame lays squarely on his shoulders."

I nod my head and get a hug from Shelby, too. Not wanting to sit and stew over the pending discussion between Ledger, Mason, and Garrett…Shelby and I decide to keep ourselves busy. We use our nervous energy to clean, do the grocery shopping together, and whatever else we can think of to stave off our anxiety.
